What is AI visibility? A plain-English guide to GEO

7 min read

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best CRM for a small sales team?", they get a short list of three to five products, described in a couple of sentences each. There is no page two. If your brand isn't in that answer, you were never in the running — and unlike a search results page, you can't see it happen.

AI visibility is the measure of how often, how prominently, and how favorably AI assistants mention your brand when people ask questions in your market. The practice of improving it goes by a few names — generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), or simply AI search optimization. The label matters less than the shift behind it: a growing share of buying research now ends inside an AI answer instead of on a results page.

How AI answers differ from search results

A search results page is a ranked list of links; the searcher does the evaluating. An AI answer is a synthesized recommendation; the model has already done the evaluating. That changes what you need to care about in three ways.

  • Mentions replace rankings. The useful question is no longer "what position do we hold for this keyword?" but "in what percentage of answers to this question do we appear at all?" — your mention rate.
  • Sentiment is part of the result. An answer that says your product "is easy to start with, but reporting is limited" shapes the buyer's shortlist before they ever reach your site. How AI describes you matters as much as whether it names you.
  • Citations are the new backlinks. Models and AI search products lean on a relatively small set of sources — comparison articles, community threads, documentation, review sites. Which pages get cited for your buyers' questions tells you exactly where to earn a presence.

Why this is hard to see from the inside

AI answers are not stable. The same question asked twice can produce different product lists. Answers differ between ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews, and they shift as models are updated and as the underlying sources change. A single spot check in one chat window tells you almost nothing.

Measuring AI visibility properly means asking the same set of buyer questions repeatedly, across every platform that matters, and tracking the trend: your mention rate, your average position within answers, the sentiment of the descriptions, and the sources each answer cites. That's the baseline. Improvement work — publishing the comparison page you're missing, getting listed in the article every model cites, unblocking an AI crawler — only makes sense once you can see the gaps.

Where to start

Write down the ten questions a serious buyer in your category would ask an assistant — not your keywords, their questions. Ask them across the major platforms and note who appears. Most teams doing this for the first time discover two or three competitors being recommended ahead of them in answers they'd never seen.

That exercise, automated and run continuously, is what Cited does: it tracks the questions you care about across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and AI Overviews, and turns the gaps into a prioritized list of fixes. Your first report is free and ready within 24 hours.
